Introduction

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley, Berkeley, Cal, or California) is a public research university in the United States. Located in the city of Berkeley, it was founded in 1868 and serves as the flagship institution of the ten research universities affiliated with the University of California system.

Berkeley is one of the 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities, with $789 million in R&D expenditures in the fiscal year 2014-2015. Today, Berkeley maintains close relationships with many departments and is home to many orgranizations, including the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Space Sciences Laboratory.
